Hawaii DID Numbers

Many Voip services do not offer Hawaii (area code 808) numbers. Voip.Ms does and their rates are quite cheap considering.

Often some of the islands will be listed as "carrier order" which will take a little while to acquire and at a slightly higher cost. Alternatively, nobody seems to know which island a particular number is on so you could choose any island. HawaiianTel, which will nickle and dime you on every service offers unlimited dialing on your own island and an upcharge to dial the rest of the state. This is why many people just use cellphones or Voip. So you might consider getting a telephone number of your own island just to help out those poor souls stuck with expensive onisland calling from HawaiianTel.

Very old topic, but in case anyone's interested, I was able to obtain a Wailuku (Maui) number for my buddy over there, from Callcentric.  Level 3 is the CLEC hosting the number on 808-495.  As with voip.ms, CC had to order it, but it only took a few days.  Crystal-clear calling, thanks to his OBi attached to cable internet service.

Voip.Ms has new 808 numbers but cannot port in various ones. When I asked it came down to their supplier not having a presence in certain central offices, where Callcentric did.

So I have a neighbor who cannot port their existing 808 number into Vpoip.Ms but can get a new one with them. CallCentric said they could port that same number into their service.

On the Big Island for example, all telephone numbers report as the town named Hilo (the county seat) even though we may be 100 miles drive from there.

Our only area code is 808 and only people with landlines worry about what city the call goes to. The exception is the local landline company has massive long distance rates to call other islands.

These rates show that they are really ripping people off.

So with Voip.Ms I pay 80 cents a month for the phone number and pay per minute.

A call to anywhere is like a penny a minute. Calling the UK is about 1.5 cents a minute.

Hey, does anyone know of any VoIP providers that have local Hawaii numbers available? Preferably on a pay per minute plan, rather than a fixed monthly fee for x minutes talk time.

Spammers can call showing you any phone number they want. Thus it is not just 808 numbers. You might send all calls which you do not recognize to voicemail.

BY the way, I personally have 808 numbers and am happy to call you if you wish, so that at least one call from 808 is not a warranty call :-)

Unless you are in Hawaii or have friends who live here, calls from 808 are probably spam. I say this because many people who have moved here kept their mainland numbers. There are lots of people who grew up here who still have 808 numbers, but there are few businesses who call from 808 to people not in the state.
